Whether the difficulty is a strained marriage, a teenager who has withdrawn, or a stretch of stress that will not lift, that combination is what tends to move things. Alethea Braun-Dunagan, LPC, has lived in Flagstaff for many years and completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Northern Arizona University (NAU). She knows the local rhythms, from the academic calendar to seasonal work to the winters, and she brings focused experience in postpartum mood disorders, couples counseling, and therapy with school-age children and adolescents. Because she is also this practice's intake specialist, Ms. Braun-Dunagan offers new clients a complimentary 20-minute video visit, so you can decide together which therapist fits before anything is committed to. Clients here can then meet at the office on North Beaver Street, by secure video, or in whatever combination a given month calls for. ## Counseling and Therapy Services Below are six areas Ms. Braun-Dunagan works in most often with Flagstaff clients, whether at the office or over video. - **Child & Adolescent Therapy.** Young clients are met where they are developmentally, with parents brought in as allies rather than as observers. Youth advocacy and restoring trust after a rupture at home are long-standing parts of this work. - **Anxiety, Stress & Social Phobia.** Anxious avoidance shrinks a life gradually. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), sessions identify what is being avoided and build a graded return to it, one step at a time and at a pace you agree to. - **Couples & Relationship Health.** Most couples arrive with one fight they have had a hundred times. The work is to understand what each partner is protecting inside it, then to practice a different response when it starts up again. - **Postpartum Adjustment & Women's Issues.** New parenthood can unsettle mood, sleep, and identity all at once. This work extends to the pressures women carry in other seasons of life as well, from caregiving to a change of career. - **Trauma, PTSD & Complex Trauma.** Nothing is forced: early sessions build steadiness through regulation skills, grounding, and rest, and the memories themselves are approached gradually, with your consent renewed as the work moves forward. - **Addictions & Relapse Prevention.** Recovery holds when the situations that threaten it have been mapped out in advance. Counseling covers the high-risk moments specific to your own life along with the habits and relationships surrounding them. ## Our Approach to Counseling The method here is Cognitive Behavioral, used inside a holistic and individualized frame, which means the person in front of us matters more than the diagnostic label. Goals are agreed early and revisited as circumstances shift. Appointments are usually weekly and the work usually spans months, since this practice does not offer a quick fix. Flagstaff is home for us as well, so a plan takes account of what living here involves, from a school year that structures family life to a winter that can make any weekly commitment harder to keep. ## Your Counseling Team Flagstaff counseling is provided by Alethea Braun-Dunagan, M.A., LPC. Della S. Lusk, Ph.D., our Clinical Director, oversees the practice and conducts psychological testing when it is needed. Dr. Lusk directs this practice. She is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who works in both English and Spanish and whose career spans more than twenty-five years. Her role on the counseling side is clinical oversight, together with psychological evaluation when a plan calls for formal testing. A Licensed Professional Counselor and a longtime Flagstaff resident, Ms. Braun-Dunagan earned both her undergraduate and her graduate degrees at Northern Arizona University. She counsels children, adolescents, adults, and couples using Cognitive Behavioral techniques within a holistic, individualized approach, with professional interests in postpartum mood disorders, women's issues, stress management, and relapse prevention. She is also our intake specialist. ## At the Office or Over Video Our office is at 710 N Beaver Street, and in-person counseling is available there. It is a quiet room belonging to neither home nor work, which for some people is the whole point of leaving the house for an appointment. Virtual sessions use the same Cognitive Behavioral approach and keep momentum through a snowed-in week or a crowded one. Switching between the two takes nothing more than a call to the office, and your treatment plan continues unchanged either way. ## Students, Faculty, and Campus Staff Coconino Community College and Northern Arizona University (NAU) bring a great many people to town, and we counsel students, instructors, and staff from both who want a confidential place to think, well away from the department or the residence hall. ## Serving Flagstaff and the Surrounding Area Clients come from Flagstaff and from Sedona, Williams, and communities across Coconino County. Some prefer the privacy of the Beaver Street office; others find that a virtual appointment is what makes weekly counseling realistic. ## Getting to the office We are at 710 N Beaver Street, BLDG 4, in the Flagstaff Doctors’ Village. Dedicated parking lot from Leroux Street; on-street parking on Beaver and Sullivan Streets. Across the street from Stop 30 (Stop Code 68) on Mountain Line's Blue Route (Route 2). Separate entry and exit doors. ## Common Questions ### Does Ms. Braun-Dunagan see young people? She does, and children and youth are among her particular areas of expertise. Methods are chosen to suit your child's age, and parents are included in goal-setting so that whatever is learned in a session has support at home. ### Are in-person appointments available? Yes. Counseling sessions are held at the Flagstaff office as well as by secure video, and you are welcome to move between the two as your schedule or the weather changes over a course of treatment. ### What does a first appointment involve? Mostly listening. Your counselor will ask what brought you in, what has already been tried, and what a better situation would look like, then go over confidentiality and sketch out a plan with you before the hour is up. ### What is the free consultation? New clients can book a 20-minute video conversation with Ms. Braun-Dunagan at no charge. It exists so you can ask questions and get a sense of how she works before deciding whether to begin, rather than committing on trust alone. ### What about fees and insurance? Our rates are sent in a fee agreement when you schedule an appointment. The office also goes over out-of-network questions with you ahead of a first appointment. Please call (928) 774-7997 with any questions beforehand, which keeps that conversation out of your counseling hour. ## Getting started Call our Flagstaff office when you are ready to begin, or to ask about the complimentary consultation. Ms. Braun-Dunagan or a member of staff will hear what you are looking for, send the fee agreement, and offer some times. ## Payment Our rates are sent in a fee agreement when you schedule an appointment. Please check with your insurance company regarding your out-of-network benefits. As a courtesy, we will submit claims on your behalf upon request, and any reimbursement will be sent directly to the insured.
